Nandgaon Nand Bhawan.Nandgaon is a Braj village on a hill, honoured as the home of Nanda Maharaj and Mother Yashoda, Krishna’s foster parents. At the top stands Nand Bhawan (Nand Baba Temple), a temple complex with courtyards and pillars representing the house where Krishna grew up. Steps climb the hill, lined with small shrines and views of fields and other Braj villages. The atmosphere is quieter than Mathura city, giving a feel of rural Braj life mixed with deep devotion.
About this place
History & highlights
Texts and oral traditions identify Nandgaon as the place where Nanda’s family shifted after leaving Gokul to escape Kansa’s attacks. The present temple’s exact building date is uncertain, but its prominence as a Krishna site is centuries old. Nandgaon’s importance is reinforced by festivals like Holi, when devotees from Mathura and elsewhere come to re-enact Krishna-lila with colours, songs and dances, forming a twin-town relationship with Barsana (Radha’s side) in Braj folklore.
