Nawalgarh Forts and Havelis

Nawalgarh Forts and Havelis

About this place

Nawalgarh Forts central square is dominated by Bala Kila (Nawalgarh Fort) with arched gateways and painted façades; around it are lanes full of havelis such as Roop Niwas Palace, Koolwal Kothi, Bhagaton ki Haveli, Grand Haveli, Aath Havelis, Kanhaiyalal Bagla Haveli etc. Roop Niwas, slightly outside the bazaar, feels like a small countryside palace with gardens and colonnades, some parts now run as a heritage stay. Overall, Nawalgarh has one of the highest concentrations of high-quality frescoes in Shekhawati, making it very suitable for walking tours and photography.

History & highlights

Nawalgarh was founded as a Shekhawat thikana in the 18th century, closely linked with Thakur Nawal Singh of the same family that ruled Mandawa. The Bala Kila and nearby fortifications were part of this planned town. As Marwari traders prospered in the 19th–20th centuries, Nawalgarh became one of their favourite hometowns for building lavishly painted mansions, many of which later served as film locations and ad-shoot sets. Today, like Mandawa, parts of Nawalgarh’s haveli stock are being restored while others are at risk, and the town is central to new government plans for heritage certification and conservation of Shekhawati havelis.
