Nigeen Lake

About this place

Often called the “jewel in the ring of lakes”, Nigeen Lake lies next to Dal Lake but is calmer and less crowded. It has its own set of houseboats, shikara routes and willow-lined shores, but the atmosphere is more peaceful, making it ideal for visitors who want quieter stays. The water is generally deeper and cleaner, and sunrise or sunset boat rides on Nigeen feel very serene, with reflections of the Hari Parbat hill, houseboats and distant mountains creating classic Kashmiri postcard scenes.

History & highlights

Historically, Nigeen has always been part of the interconnected water system of Srinagar, fed by channels and springs. In earlier times it was somewhat separated from the more commercial Dal Lake area and used more by locals and elite visitors. With the arrival of tourism, a second ring of houseboats and guest houses developed here as an alternative to busy Dal. Over the decades, environmental pressures have affected all Srinagar lakes, but Nigeen has still managed to retain a reputation for being cleaner and quieter, and is now promoted as a more tranquil, upscale lakefront within the city.
