About this place
History & highlights
Historically, Pahalgam was a small shepherds’ village used by Gujjar and Bakarwal communities who moved their flocks across higher pastures. Its role as a tourist hill station grew in the 20th century when road access improved and films began showcasing its landscapes. The valleys around Pahalgam gained further popularity after Bollywood shoots in the late 20th century (one such shoot gave Betaab Valley its modern name). The area’s pastoral roots are still visible in seasonal shepherd encampments and traditional wooden homes.
