Palakkad Fort

Palakkad Fort

About this place

Palakkad Fort is a well-preserved laterite fort with thick walls, a moat, grassy interior and small temples and buildings inside. Set against the backdrop of the Palakkad Gap hills, it forms a striking green-and-red landscape. Locals use the fort grounds for walks, jogging and events, and visitors explore its bastions and gateways.

History & highlights

The fort, often associated with Hyder Ali of Mysore, was rebuilt and strengthened in the 18th century to control the strategically important Palakkad Gap, a low pass in the Western Ghats that links Kerala with Tamil Nadu. The fort changed hands between Mysore forces and the British during the Anglo–Mysore wars. After British consolidation, it served as a garrison and administrative point. Today it stands as a symbol of Palakkad’s role as a gateway between the Tamil plains and the Kerala coast, as well as a reminder of Mysore–British military contests.
