About this place
History & highlights
Panhala was a key Maratha stronghold and is closely associated with Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The famous 1660 escape of Shivaji from Panhala during Siddi Johar’s siege and his nighttime march to Vishalgad is a legendary episode in Maratha history. The fort predates the Marathas, having seen rule by Shilahara and Adil Shahi dynasties, but gained greatest fame under Shivaji and later Kolhapur rulers. Under the British it lost military importance but remained symbolically important; today it’s a protected monument and tourist hill-fort.
