Patnitop Hill Station and Naag Mandir

About this place

Patnitop is a small plateau-top hill station in the Jammu region, with pine forests, walking trails, viewpoints and snow in winter. It offers a cooler escape from the plains and now also has adventure activities like paragliding and ropeways. Nearby lies the Naag Mandir, a small but ancient snake-deity temple, visited by locals and tourists alike.

History & highlights

The plateau sits on the historic Jammu–Srinagar route and was long used as a rest point for travellers and pony caravans. The name is often linked to “Pattan da talab/Top” (a meadow stop) in local lore. Under Dogra rule and later in the British period, it evolved as a hill retreat for officials. In recent decades, highway improvements and cottage/hotel development transformed Patnitop into one of Jammu region’s best-known hill stations, while the Naag temple reflects older hill-Hindu traditions of serpent worship and local deities.
