Radha Gopinath Temple

About this place

Radha Gopinath Temple is one of Vrindavan’s important old Goswami temples, known for its serene, traditional atmosphere. The main altar has the beautiful deity of Gopinath with Srimati Radharani and the sakhis, and the courtyard holds samadhis and old rooms of saints. Compared to very crowded temples, the mood here is quieter and more meditative, with soft kirtan, lamp-light and an authentic Braj ambience in the narrow lanes around it. Many Braj yatra groups consider darshan here essential after visiting Govind Dev, Radha Raman and other ancient shrines.

History & highlights

According to tradition, the deity of Gopinath was originally installed in Vrindavan about 5,000 years ago by Vajranabha, the great-grandson of Lord Krishna, at Vamsi Vat on the Yamuna’s bank. Over time, the deity became hidden and was rediscovered in the 16th century at Vamsi Vat by Paramananda Bhattacharya, a disciple in the Gaudiya line. The worship was later taken over by Madhu Pandit Goswami, an important follower of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, who established the present temple near Govind Dev. During the Mughal period, the original Gopinath deity was moved to Jaipur for protection, where it is worshipped today; the Vrindavan temple now houses the pratibhu (representative) deity and remains one of the celebrated Seven Goswami Temples of Vrindavan, preserving centuries of Gaudiya Vaishnava history.
