Rajwada Palace and Old City

Rajwada Palace and Old City

About this place

Rajwada Palace is a seven-storey historic palace in the middle of Indore’s old bazaar area near the bustling Rajwada square. Its arched gateway, wooden balconies and central courtyard open onto markets full of jewellery, sarees, spices and street food. At night, the palace façade lighting and fountain shows combine with the energy of surrounding lanes to give a very atmospheric “old Indore” feel.

History & highlights

Rajwada was built by the Holkar rulers in the 18th century when Indore became their main seat of power. It functioned as a royal residence and administrative hub for the Malwa region. The building suffered damage in fires in the 19th and 20th centuries but has been repeatedly restored. Today it stands as the most recognisable symbol of Holkar-era Indore, linking the modern commercial city with its Maratha princely past.
