Ram Ghat

Ram Ghat

About this place

Ram Ghat is a long, busy ghat along the Mandakini River in Chitrakoot, lined with temples, ashrams, and small shops. Pilgrims bathe in the river, perform rituals for ancestors, and participate in the famous evening aarti, when lamps and bhajans light up the entire riverside. The ghat serves as the main base for visitors doing parikrama of various nearby Ramayana-related sites, and its ambience is deeply spiritual yet simple and village-like.

History & highlights

In the Ramayana tradition, Chitrakoot is the place where Lord Ram, Sita and Lakshman spent a significant part of their exile. Ram Ghat is associated with their stay and with episodes of divine visits and sage meetings. Over centuries, saints and devotees established small shrines and maths along the river, gradually turning the area into a major tirtha. Many of the existing temples and structures are of later medieval and early modern origin, but they preserve the sacred geography described in scriptures. Today, Ram Ghat continues to be at the centre of Chitrakoot’s religious life and festivals, especially during Ram Navami and Kartik fairs.
