About this place
History & highlights
Rankala is believed to be an old lake formed by the collapse of a stone quarry or geological depression, with legends linking it to Lord Shiva and the subterranean connection to Panhalgad. Historically, local rulers improved the bunds and ghats, making it a stable water body. During the princely state era, landscaping and pathways around the lake turned it into a planned recreational space for the royal family and citizens. Today, beautification projects continue, preserving it as a key urban lung space for Kolhapur.
