Sabarmati Riverfront and Atal Bridge Zone

About this place

The Sabarmati Riverfront is Ahmedabad’s modern, open-air living room – a long landscaped promenade stretching along both banks of the river. It offers wide walking paths, cycling tracks, gardens, seating steps, boating points and event spaces, making it a favourite evening hangout for locals and visitors. The highlight is Atal Foot Over Bridge, a striking pedestrian bridge with colourful panels and dramatic night lighting, which has become one of the city’s most photographed spots. Families come here for relaxed walks, street food and river views, while runners and cyclists use it as a safe, scenic route. Seasonal festivals, marathons and cultural events are often hosted along the river, giving the area an energetic but still pleasant vibe. Together, the riverfront and Atal Bridge showcase how urban design can reclaim a river edge for people instead of only traffic and industry.

History & highlights

The Sabarmati Riverfront project was conceived in the late 20th century and implemented in phases from the early 2000s onward. Its goals were flood control, river cleaning and creation of accessible public space. Over the years, promenades, gardens, ghats, roads and utilities were added. Atal Foot Over Bridge was inaugurated more recently as a sculptural pedestrian link between the two banks, quickly becoming a symbol of the “new” Ahmedabad. The area continues to evolve, with upcoming cultural, commercial and recreational developments planned along the river corridor.
