Sahibganj ghats,Sahibganj is a riverfront town on the Ganga, with ghats, boats and views of distant hills on the opposite bank. The main ghats are used for bathing, Ganga aarti, puja and local ferries, giving the town a continuous riverside buzz. During festivals like Chhath, Kartik Purnima and Ganga Dussehra, the steps fill with devotees, lamps and stalls, and the river becomes the centre of religious and social activity.
About this place
History & highlights
Historically, Sahibganj and nearby Rajmahal formed an important stretch along the Ganges for trade and administration. Mughal and later British authorities used the riverfront as a stop on the route between Bengal and the interior. The presence of ghats and river markets reflects this long-standing role as a transit and trading point. After Independence and the reorganisation of states, Sahibganj became a district HQ in Jharkhand, with the Ganga still defining its identity—now partly shifting towards plans for river ports and tourism, besides traditional religious uses.
