Sam Sand Dunes (Thar Desert)

Sam Sand Dunes (Thar Desert)

About this place

About 40 km west of Jaisalmer, the Sam Sand Dunes form one of the most famous desert landscapes in India – rolling golden dunes, camel caravans against the sunset, and lines of tented camps lighting up after dark. Visitors come for camel and jeep safaris, sunset and sunrise views, and evening cultural programs with Rajasthani music and dance under the stars. During the Jaisalmer Desert Festival the area turns into a carnival of folk performances, competitions and fairground rides. Despite being touristy and busy in peak season, the wide open sky, shifting sands and silence away from the lights still give a powerful feeling of the Thar Desert’s scale.

History & highlights

Historically these dune belts were grazing and roaming grounds for local desert communities and their livestock. In the late 20th century, as Jaisalmer opened up to tourism and road connectivity improved, Sam developed into the main hub for organised desert experiences—first with basic camel safaris and simple bivouacs, later with permanent and semi-permanent tented camps offering packages of rides, cultural shows and meals. Today Sam Sand Dunes is heavily marketed by camps, travel agencies and taxi operators, bringing income to local villagers but also raising questions about dune conservation, waste management and over-commercialisation – issues local authorities and operators are gradually trying to address through guidelines and eco-tourism messaging.
