Sarthana Nature Park and Zoo

About this place

SarSarthana Nature Park & Zoo is Surat’s main zoological garden and green lung, spread over more than 80 acres along the Tapi. The park combines tree-lined walking paths, large animal enclosures and quiet riverbank views, offering a welcome break from the dense urban core. Visitors can see lions, tigers, bears, deer, birds and reptiles, along with a butterfly garden and children’s recreation areas. Because of its size, the zoo feels more like a nature campus than a compact city zoo; families often spend several hours walking the 2 km route inside. In recent years, Sarthana has become one of Surat’s most visited attractions during weekends and school holidays, popular with both locals and outstation travellers.

History & highlights

Established in 1984, Sarthana Nature Park was the first zoo in South Gujarat and one of the earliest major zoological facilities in the state. Managed by Surat Municipal Corporation, it soon developed into an important breeding centre for lions, royal Bengal tigers, Himalayan bears, white peafowl and, uniquely, smooth-coated otters. Over time, infrastructure has been upgraded, visitor routes widened and new exhibits added. The zoo’s strong breeding success and high visitor numbers have made it a flagship recreational and conservation site for the region, demonstrating Surat’s commitment to wildlife awareness alongside rapid urban growth.
