Sayaji Baug (Kamati Baug) and Baroda Museum

About this place

Sayaji Baug, also known as Kamati Baug, is a vast public garden on the banks of the Vishwamitri River and one of the finest urban parks in western India. Spread over about 113 acres, it combines lush lawns, tree-lined avenues, fountains and flowerbeds with major cultural attractions, including the Baroda Museum & Picture Gallery, Sayaji Baug Zoo, Sardar Patel Planetarium, aquarium, health museum, floral clock and a popular joy train. The museum and picture gallery house impressive collections such as an Egyptian mummy, a blue-whale skeleton, Akota bronzes and European paintings, while the zoo and aquarium are favourites with children. Morning walkers, families, students and tourists all use the park, making it a lively yet green escape in the middle of the city. For visitors, Sayaji Baug offers a full mix of nature, history, science and low-cost entertainment in one accessible complex.

History & highlights

The garden was built by Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III and dedicated to the citizens of Baroda in 1879, reflecting his focus on public welfare, education and urban beautification. The Baroda Museum and Picture Gallery were added in the 1890s, designed partly on the lines of London’s Victoria & Albert Museum, to bring world art and knowledge to local people. Over time, new attractions like the planetarium, joy train and floral clock were introduced, and the municipal corporation took over maintenance. Today, Sayaji Baug remains a central symbol of the Gaekwad legacy and Vadodara’s identity as a “cultural city”.
