Science Centre, Surat

About this place

Science Centre, Surat is a large, modern complex combining a science museum, interactive galleries, an art gallery, auditorium, amphitheatre and a full-dome planetarium. Set on City Light Road, it’s designed as an educational and entertainment hub where children and adults can experiment with hands-on exhibits, learn physics principles, explore human biology, and watch immersive astronomy shows. The campus also hosts temporary exhibitions, school programmes and public events, making it a key STEM destination in Gujarat. Air-conditioned halls, clear signage and structured galleries provide a comfortable learning environment, while the adjoining open spaces and river-connected city setting make it an easy half-day visit for families.

History & highlights

The Science Centre was developed by Surat Municipal Corporation in the 2000s as part of the city’s push towards education, culture and “smart city” infrastructure. The planetarium’s foundation stone was laid in 2005, and the full complex opened in 2009 as the first of its kind in western India. It reflects Surat’s modern identity: not just a textile and diamond hub, but also a centre for innovation and public science outreach. Over time, upgrades including a rooftop solar plant and new exhibits have kept the centre relevant, drawing school groups and tourists who want a structured, indoor learning experience alongside the city’s historical and religious sites.
