About this place
History & highlights
The temple was founded in the late 19th century by sweet-maker Dagdusheth Halwai and his wife, after the death of their son; they installed a Ganesh idol as an act of faith and healing. Lokmanya Tilak later encouraged public Ganesh festivities in Pune, and this temple became a key centre for those celebrations, linking devotion with the freedom movement. Over time, with growing donations and fame, the temple trust expanded social work—schools, orphanages, relief efforts—while the shrine remained one of Pune’s strongest symbols of Ganesh bhakti.
