Shri Mahalakshmi Temple. The spiritual heart of Kolhapur, this stone temple complex is dedicated to Goddess Mahalakshmi (Ambabai). The sanctum houses a powerful black-stone idol richly decorated with jewellery and flowers. The complex includes multiple shrines, deepastambha (lamp towers) and a busy courtyard. Devotees visit daily for darshan, especially during Navratri and Kirnotsav, when the setting sun’s rays fall directly on the deity, creating a dramatic spiritual spectacle.
About this place
History & highlights
The Mahalakshmi Temple is believed to be over a thousand years old, with references going back at least to the 7th–8th century CE under early Chalukya/related dynasties. Over the centuries, rulers such as the Shilaharas, Yadavas and later the Kolhapur Bhosale Marathas patronised and expanded the temple. Under British rule, Kolhapur remained a princely state centred on this shrine. After Independence the temple has remained one of India’s most important Shakti Peeths, drawing pilgrims from across the country and receiving government attention for conservation and crowd-management.
