Shri Ram Mandir

Shri Ram Mandir

About this place

Shri Ram Mandir in Ayodhya is a grand new temple dedicated to Lord Ram at his traditional birthplace, regarded as one of the most sacred sites in Hindu faith. Designed in majestic Nagara style, the temple features towering shikharas, intricately carved sandstone pillars, spacious mandapas and a sanctum where the child form of Ram Lalla is worshipped. The broader complex is planned as a huge spiritual, cultural and educational hub with museums, exhibits and facilities for pilgrims. The city around it is rapidly developing with new ghats, roads and visitor amenities, transforming Ayodhya into a major international pilgrimage and heritage destination.

History & highlights

The Ram Janmabhoomi site has been revered in tradition and scripture for centuries, but in modern times it became the centre of a long religious and legal dispute. After decades of political and court battles, the Supreme Court of India in November 2019 granted the disputed land for the construction of a Hindu temple and allotted alternate land elsewhere in Ayodhya for a mosque. Following this verdict, the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust was formed to oversee construction. The foundation stone for the new temple was laid in August 2020, and the consecration (pran-pratishtha) of the main idol of Ram Lalla took place on 22 January 2024 in a nationally televised ceremony. As the remaining parts of the complex are completed, Ram Mandir stands as both a powerful symbol of devotion to Lord Ram and a landmark chapter in independent India’s religious and legal history.
