Siliserh Lake and Siliserh Lake Palace

Siliserh Lake and Siliserh Lake Palace

About this place

Siliserh is a large artificial lake set among low Aravalli hills about 15–16 km from Alwar, surrounded by forested slopes and rocky outcrops. On one side stands the picturesque Siliserh Lake Palace, built right at the water’s edge so that balconies and terraces look straight out over the lake. The area is popular for boating, picnics, light trekking and bird-watching; when water levels are good, the reflections of hills and palace make it one of the prettiest lakescapes in the district. Crocodiles and water birds are sometimes seen, and in the evenings the place feels like a cool, green escape from the city heat.

History & highlights

Siliserh Lake was created in 1845 by Maharaja Vinay Singh of Alwar by building an embankment across a tributary of the Ruparel River to supply drinking water to Alwar town; aqueducts from the lake still testify to this utility function. On the lakeshore he built Siliserh Lake Palace as a hunting lodge and summer retreat for his queen Shila (Sheela) Devi, a princess of Bharatpur – a romantic gesture that local tourism now highlights as a love story. Later the palace was converted into an RTDC heritage hotel, and in 2025 India formally proposed Siliserh Lake for Ramsar (international wetland) status, emphasising both its ecological and cultural significance.
