Sonamarg, literally “meadow of gold”, is a high valley surrounded by sharp peaks and alpine forests, especially stunning in late spring and early summer when flowers and greenery contrast with remaining snow. Short treks or pony rides lead to Thajiwas Glacier, where visitors can see snow and ice close-up for much of the year.
About this place
History & highlights
Traditionally, Sonamarg sat on routes used by traders, shepherds and caravan groups heading towards Ladakh and Central Asia via the Zoji La pass. It was more of a seasonal stopover and grazing area than a town. Its fame as a tourist destination grew in the 20th century with improved roads from Srinagar and later with motorable access towards Leh. Today Sonamarg is seen as the gateway to high-mountain landscapes from the Kashmir side and a popular excursion point from Srinagar.
