Sri Krishna Matha

Sri Krishna Matha

About this place

Sri Krishna Matha is the spiritual heart of Udupi, a temple complex where devotees have darshan of Lord Krishna through a small silver-plated window called the Kanakana Kindi. The matha is surrounded by eight smaller monasteries (Ashta Mathas), a temple tank and old-style houses, creating a traditional pilgrimage ambience. The daily pujas, car festivals and sevas draw pilgrims all year round.

History & highlights

The temple was founded in the 13th century by the saint Sri Madhvacharya, the proponent of the Dvaita (dualistic) school of Vedanta. Udupi became the centre of his tradition, with the Ashta Mathas managing worship and teaching. Legends connect the deity’s installation to a miraculous discovery from a ship. Over centuries, Udupi Krishna Matha turned the town into a major Vaishnavite pilgrimage centre, influencing philosophy, food (Udupi cuisine) and temple rituals across the region.
