History & highlights

Kannur (Cannanore) was a crucial Malabar trading port, visited by Arab, Chinese and European merchants. The Portuguese built St. Angelo Fort in the early 16th century; it later passed to the Dutch and then the British, who used it as a military outpost controlling the coast and local rulers. The beach and fort area has witnessed centuries of maritime activity, colonial battles and later nationalist politics. In independent India, the fort became an archaeological monument, while the beach turned into a public leisure space, both symbolising Kannur’s maritime and colonial legacy.
