St. Francis Church and Santa Cruz Basilica

About this place

St. Francis Church and Santa Cruz Basilica,These two churches in Fort Kochi are among the most significant Christian heritage sites in India. St. Francis is one of the oldest European churches in the country, with a simple, dignified interior, while Santa Cruz Basilica is more ornate, with colourful stained glass and vaulted ceilings. Together they provide insight into centuries of Christian presence connected to Portuguese, Dutch and British rule.

History & highlights

St. Francis Church dates back to the early 16th century, built by the Portuguese and originally housing the remains of Vasco da Gama before they were moved to Lisbon. It later passed into Dutch and then Anglican hands. Santa Cruz Basilica began as a Portuguese church that was later demolished and rebuilt, eventually receiving basilica status. Their history mirrors the shifts in European colonial power on the Malabar coast and the long story of Christianity in Kerala, from early Syrian Christian roots to Latin-rite missions.
