Tagore Hill

About this place

Tagore Hill is a rocky hillock on the edge of Ranchi city, offering peaceful views, walking paths and open sky. A small building and ashram complex near the top, along with spacious terraces, make it a popular spot for students, families and walkers who come for sunrise, sunset and quiet time. The climb is moderate and the surroundings still retain a slightly rustic feel despite the expanding city.

History & highlights

The hill is associated with the family of Rabindranath Tagore. One of his elder brothers, Jyotirindranath Tagore, is believed to have used this area as a retreat and place of study in the early 20th century. Though Rabindranath himself did not live here long-term, the Tagore connection gave the hill its name and a literary aura. Later, an ashram and educational activities were developed at the base and on the slopes. Today Tagore Hill symbolises Ranchi’s quieter, intellectual side and its early links with wider Bengali cultural currents.
