Tea Plantations and Hill Town

About this place

Tea Plantations and Hill Town,Munnar is a cool hill station where rolling hills are covered with neatly manicured tea gardens, interspersed with shola forests, rivers and viewpoints. The town acts as a base for visiting tea factories, trekking to Anamudi region, and exploring nearby waterfalls and dams. Misty mornings, winding roads and the striking green carpets of tea make it one of India’s most photogenic hill destinations.

History & highlights

The area was traditionally used by local tribal communities and for shifting cultivation. In the late 19th century, under British rule, planters discovered its potential for tea cultivation. Large estates were established by British companies, with Munnar developing as a plantation town and hill retreat. Estate bungalows, narrow-gauge lines and factories were built to process and transport tea. After Independence, ownership shifted to Indian companies, but the basic pattern of a plantation-based hill economy remained, while tourism emerged as a major secondary industry from the late 20th century onwards.
