Thiksey Monastery

Thiksey Monastery

About this place

Thiksey Monastery rises in tiers on a hill above the Indus valley, often compared to a smaller version of Lhasa’s Potala. White buildings, red chapels and golden roofs cascade down the slope, with prayer flags fluttering everywhere. Inside are assembly halls with rows of monks, old statues, thangkas, libraries and a striking multi-storey statue of Maitreya Buddha. From the upper courtyards you get excellent views of green fields, villages and distant mountains.

History & highlights

Thiksey is a major Gelugpa (Yellow Hat) monastery founded in the 15th century. It became an important religious and educational centre for the region, supported by Ladakhi kings and local villagers. Over centuries, its buildings expanded in layers down the hill. The large Maitreya statue was installed in the 20th century to commemorate a visit by the 14th Dalai Lama. Today, Thiksey remains an active monastic community and one of Ladakh’s best-known monasteries, representing Tibetan Buddhist tradition and Ladakhi art.
