Trimbakeshwar Shiva Temple (Jyotirlinga)

About this place

Trimbakeshwar Temple. An important Jyotirlinga temple 28 km from Nashik, at the foot of Brahmagiri hills where the Godavari River originates. The black stone temple has a distinctive Hemadpanti style with a towering shikhara, mandapa and sacred tank. Inside, the linga is a unique form with three faces representing Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva, and pilgrims come for various pujas and rituals including pitru-karmas and Kumbh-related rites.

History & highlights

The present structure was built in the 18th century by Peshwa Balaji Bajirao (Nana Saheb) on the site of a much older shrine. Trimbakeshwar has long been one of the twelve Jyotirlingas and is also tied to the Nashik Kumbh Mela, held every 12 years along the Godavari. Saints like Nivruttinath, elder brother of Sant Dnyaneshwar, are associated with the place, adding bhakti-era prestige. Today it remains a major ritual centre, with modern crowd-management and big state attention ahead of each Kumbh.
