Tungnath Temple and Chandrashila

Tungnath Temple and Chandrashila

About this place

Tungnath Temple is one of the highest Shiva temples in the world and the highest among the Panch Kedar shrines, at about 3,680 m. The stone temple sits on a ridge above Chopta, reached by a paved 3.5–5 km trek that passes through meadows and rhododendron groves. Just above the temple is Chandrashila Peak, a rocky summit with spectacular panoramic views of snow peaks and valleys. Together, Tungnath and Chandrashila offer a unique blend of pilgrimage and trekking: devotees ring bells and perform puja at the small shrine, then continue higher for meditation and sunrise views from the peak.

History & highlights

According to the Panch Kedar legend, Tungnath is where the arms of Lord Shiva emerged when he disappeared into the earth as a bull. Folklore also says that the temple’s foundation was laid by Arjuna, and that the site was later “rediscovered” and re-established by Adi Shankaracharya. Chandrashila (“moon rock”) is linked with stories of Lord Rama performing penance here after defeating Ravana, as well as other Puranic anecdotes that add spiritual depth to the climb. Over time, the route has evolved from a purely religious trail used by local shepherds and sadhus into one of India’s most popular short Himalayan treks, introducing new generations to the heritage of Panch Kedar.
