Vadakkunnathan Temple

Vadakkunnathan Temple

About this place

Vadakkunnathan Temple is an ancient Shiva temple set within a large walled complex, with multiple shrines and classic Kerala-style architecture—sloping tile roofs, wooden carvings and mural paintings. The entire complex sits on a hill in the centre of Thrissur, surrounded by a circular road, giving the city its unique layout. The temple is a peaceful spiritual space and the backdrop for the famous Thrissur Pooram festival, when decorated elephants, percussion ensembles and fireworks fill the area.

History & highlights

The temple is believed to be one of the oldest in Kerala, associated with the sage Parasurama in legend. Historically, it was patronised by local chieftains and later by the Cochin royal family, who used Thrissur as an important religious and cultural centre. In the 18th–19th centuries, Thrissur grew as a key town under rulers like Sakthan Thampuran, and Vadakkunnathan became the core around which the city was planned. Its role in hosting Thrissur Pooram cemented its position as a cultural heart of Kerala, even as the temple itself remains relatively austere and traditional.
