Vikramshila University Ruins

About this place

Vikramshila is one of Bihar’s most meaningful “ancient learning” destinations—ruins of a major Buddhist monastic university tradition. The site appeals to history lovers because you can imagine the scale of scholarship: monastic study spaces, structured learning, and a campus-like Buddhist world that once linked Bihar to international Buddhist networks.

History & highlights

Historical sources note Vikramshila was founded by King Dharmapala (Pala dynasty) between the late 8th and early 9th century, and later declined—often associated with destruction around the late 12th century during invasions attributed to Bakhtiyar Khalji’s campaigns. Bihar Tourism also highlights Dharmapala’s role in establishing it, showing its importance as a state heritage site today.
