Vishnupad Temple

About this place

Vishnupad Temple is the spiritual heart of Gaya—especially known for ancestral rites (pind daan/shraddha) and its strong Vaishnav identity. Located by the Phalgu River, it draws pilgrims throughout the year and becomes especially significant during ritual seasons when families come to perform traditional ceremonies.

History & highlights

The present structure is widely noted as rebuilt in 1787 by Ahilyabai Holkar, and the temple’s mythic significance is tied to the story of Vishnu subduing Gayasura. Gaya’s role as a major pilgrimage center predates modern Bihar, and Vishnupad remains one of the key institutions sustaining that historical religious ecosystem.
