Vittala Temple and Stone Chariot

About this place

Vittala Temple and Stone Chariot,The Vittala Temple complex lies a short distance from central Hampi and is famous for its stone chariot, musical pillars and grand pavilions. Although no longer used for worship, it is one of the most spectacular pieces of temple architecture in south India. The setting among boulder hills and river sands adds drama to the carved mandapas and gopurams.

History & highlights

Built during the height of the Vijayanagara Empire, mainly under Krishnadevaraya and other rulers, the Vittala complex showcased royal wealth and artistic excellence. The stone chariot is modelled on temple cars, symbolising divine procession in stone. After the fall of Vijayanagara, the temple fell out of regular use, and parts were damaged, but the overall layout remained. Today it is a UNESCO-highlight site, representing the golden age of Hampi’s architecture and music traditions.
