Wayanad Hills, Edakkal Caves And Plantations

About this place

Wayanad Hills is a highland district with forested hills, spice and coffee plantations, wildlife sanctuaries and tribal villages. Tourist highlights include Edakkal Caves with prehistoric petroglyphs, viewpoints, waterfalls and homestays surrounded by greenery. Towns like Kalpetta, Sultan Bathery and Mananthavady act as gateways, but a lot of the charm lies in rural roads, paddy fields and misty ridges.

History & highlights

Wayanad has evidence of prehistoric habitation, most notably in the rock engravings at Edakkal Caves, which suggest human presence thousands of years ago. Historically, the region was ruled by various local chieftains and later came under the Kottayam Raja and the Pazhassi Raja of North Kerala, who resisted British expansion from these hills. In the colonial era, British planters introduced coffee, tea and later spices, reshaping land use. After Independence, Wayanad evolved from a remote forest tract into a plantation and tourism district, while still retaining a strong Adivasi presence and wildlife-rich landscapes.
