More about the state
Uttarakhand, formerly known as Uttaranchal, is a state in the northern part of India. Its history is rich and varied, reflecting the cultural, political, and social evolution of the region. Historically, Uttarakhand was part of the Kuru and Panchala kingdoms in ancient India, mentioned in the epic Mahabharata. It was also the land where many sages and saints of Hinduism, such as Vyasa, Vashistha, and Garga, resided and meditated. Finally, on November 9, 2000, Uttarakhand was carved out of Uttar Pradesh as the 27th state of the Indian Union.
