Bhiwani is a historic city and district of southwestern Haryana, known for its ancient roots, cultural legacy, and contribution to modern sports. The region has connections with the Mahabharata period and is believed to have been part of the ancient Kuru Kingdom. Archaeological findings suggest that this area was inhabited from early times due to its suitable location for agriculture and trade.
During the medieval period, Bhiwani remained under the influence of the Delhi Sultanate and later the Mughal Empire. Because of its strategic position between Rajasthan and Delhi, the region developed as an important trading center and military route. In the 18th century, the area came under the control of regional Rajput and Sikh rulers.
In the 19th century, Bhiwani became part of British India after the decline of Maratha power. The people of Bhiwani actively participated in the Indian freedom struggle, especially during the Revolt of 1857 and later movements led by Mahatma Gandhi.
After independence in 1947, Bhiwani became part of Punjab and later of Haryana in 1966. Today, Bhiwani is famous as the “City of Education” and also as a major sports hub, producing national and international boxers. The city now blends its ancient heritage with modern development.
