Manali’s history is a mix of mythology, small hill kingdom politics and modern tourism.

In Hindu tradition, Manali is linked to Sage Manu. After a great flood, Manu’s boat is said to have come to rest in this valley, where he recreated human life; the name is often explained as Manu-alaya – “abode of Manu”. Nearby Manu Temple in Old Manali keeps this legend alive and gives the town a sacred origin story connected to the creation of mankind.

Historically, Manali lay within the Kullu kingdom, known in ancient texts as Kuluta. For centuries it was just a small settlement on the route from the Kullu valley to Lahaul and Ladakh, used by traders and shepherds moving wool, salt and grain over high passes like Rohtang. The valley later came under periods of Mughal, Sikh and then British influence, but Manali itself remained a minor village compared to Kullu town.

In the 20th century, especially after Independence, road building and the promotion of Rohtang Pass and later Solang Valley for snow and adventure turned Manali into a hill resort. Guest houses, orchards, then large hotels and adventure operators transformed it into one of India’s most famous mountain destinations and a gateway to the Manali–Leh highway and high-altitude tourism.
