Bet Dwarka (Beyt Dwarka Island)

Bet Dwarka (Beyt Dwarka Island)

About this place

Bet Dwarka is an inhabited island about 2 km offshore from Okha and roughly 25 km north of Dwarka town, often identified as the original residential kingdom of Krishna. A temple linked to Vallabhacharya’s Pushtimarg tradition stands at the main settlement, where rice is offered to Krishna, recalling the story of Sudama bringing him a humble gift. Smaller shrines to various deities, quiet beaches, fishing boats and village lanes create a relaxed, old-world atmosphere. With the new Sudarshan Setu road bridge, access is now easier than the earlier boat-only connection. For Ghoomein, Bet Dwarka is perfect for “island day-trip from Dwarka” content—mixing mythology, seascapes and village life.

History & highlights

Bet Dwarka (also called Shankhodhar) has archaeological remains suggesting ancient harbour activity and long habitation. Puranic legends say Vishnu in Matsya avatar killed the demon Shankhasura here, and that Krishna ruled from this island city. The current Krishna temple is credited to Vallabhacharya in the 16th century, with many later renovations. In 2024, the inauguration of Sudarshan Setu created India’s longest cable-stayed sea bridge, firmly tying Bet Dwarka into Gujarat’s coastal pilgrimage and tourism circuits.
