Dwarkadhish Temple (Jagat Mandir)

Dwarkadhish Temple (Jagat Mandir)

About this place

Dwarkadhish Temple is the spiritual heart of Dwarka and one of India’s famous Char Dham pilgrimage shrines, dedicated to Krishna as “King of Dwarka”. The 5-storey limestone temple rises above the town with a richly carved shikhara and a huge flag that is changed several times a day. The main Jagat Mandir hall leads to the sanctum, where devotees have darshan of the black stone idol of Krishna; smaller shrines honour other deities in the complex. Pilgrims enter through Moksha Dwar, then exit via Swarga Dwar, from where 50+ steps descend to the riverfront. Aarti, bhajans, Janmashtami celebrations and evening lamps at nearby Gomti Ghat make this whole zone feel like a living temple-city, perfect for photos and reels on Ghoomein.

History & highlights

Tradition says the first temple here was built by Vajranabh, Krishna’s great-grandson, around the site of Krishna’s residence. Archaeological and textual evidence suggest an early shrine by about 200 BCE, while the present structure was rebuilt and enlarged in the 15th–16th century after earlier buildings were damaged or destroyed, including by Mahmud Begada in 1472. Dwarkadhish is also the seat of the western Sharda Peeth established by Adi Shankaracharya, cementing Dwarka’s status as a key Vaishnav and Advaita centre.
