Sanjay Van

About this place

Sanjay Van is a large forested green area in the Tanda Range, accessible from the Haldwani side and often listed among excursions from the city. Covered with sal and other trees, it offers open spaces, forest tracks and quiet corners ideal for picnics, nature walks and birdwatching. Away from traffic and concrete, it acts as a natural lungs for the region: families come to relax, students and photographers explore trails, and morning walkers enjoy the fresh air. For visitors driving up from the plains, Sanjay Van provides an easy introduction to the Terai and lower Himalayan forest ecosystem before heading deeper into the hills or Corbett side.

History & highlights

Sanjay Van is part of the Tanda Range forest and has long existed as a reserved forest area; however, only in recent decades has it been consciously branded as a “place to visit” for Haldwani tourists. As the city expanded and people began looking for green recreational spaces, travel guides and tourism portals started highlighting Sanjay Van as a picnic and sightseeing spot around 20–25 km from Haldwani. Forestry and tourism departments encourage low-impact visits here, gradually turning a once purely functional forest block into a managed eco-recreation zone. Its history thus reflects the shift from forests seen only as resource banks to forests appreciated as leisure and conservation landscapes linked to the urban population of Haldwani.
