Sheetla Devi Temple, Ranibagh

About this place

Sheetla Devi Temple is a revered hilltop shrine dedicated to Goddess Sheetla (Durga), located near Kathgodam on the Haldwani–Nainital road, close to Ranibagh. Devotees climb up a path lined with trees to reach the temple, which offers sweeping views of the Gaula valley and surrounding hills. Inside, the goddess is worshipped as a protector from epidemics and diseases; people offer coconuts, chunari and sweets, especially during Navratri. The peaceful atmosphere, cool breeze and combination of forest, river and temple make it a favourite spot for locals to spend a relaxed, devotional afternoon slightly away from the traffic of Haldwani city.

History & highlights

The cult of Sheetla Mata is ancient across North India, where she is believed to guard villages from contagious illnesses. In Haldwani region, the Ranibagh temple evolved as one of the oldest Devi shrines, serving both spiritual and practical needs: people prayed for protection before setting out for the hills or bringing children for their first mundan and blessings. As Haldwani expanded into an urban centre and Kathgodam became the railway gateway, the temple – perched above the road – became a visible landmark for travellers entering Kumaon. Today, Navratri melas, continuous flow of devotees and frequent mentions in travel guides have turned Sheetla Devi into an iconic symbol of the Haldwani–Kathgodam belt, blending folk faith with modern tourism.
