Gujarat is one of India’s oldest and most culturally rich states, with a history that dates back to the ancient Indus Valley Civilization. The famous archaeological site of Lothal in Gujarat was once a thriving port city around 2400 BCE, showing the region’s strong connection with maritime trade. In ancient times, Gujarat was ruled by the Mauryas and later became an important part of the Gupta Empire.

During the medieval period, Gujarat flourished under the Solanki Rajputs, who built magnificent temples like the famous Sun Temple at Modhera. In the 13th century, the Delhi Sultanate took control, followed by the establishment of the independent Gujarat Sultanate. The state later came under the Mughal Empire, becoming a major centre for trade, textiles, and crafts.

In the 18th century, the Marathas gained power, and later Gujarat became part of British India. The state played a powerful role in India’s freedom struggle as the birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi, who launched movements like the Dandi Salt March from Gujarat.

After independence in 1947, Gujarat became a separate state in 1960. Today, it is known for its strong economy, vibrant culture, and rich historical heritage.
